The Lobster (15)

The Lobster (15)

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

The Lobster (15)

Ireland/UK | 2015

Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos

Starring: Colin Farrell | Rachel Weisz | Olivia Colman

Written and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, whose latest film Poor Things has been in cinemas recently, this one fits into our Weird Films series very well. Starting with an absurd premise – that single people must find a mate within 45 days, or be turned into an animal of their choosing – the narrative, in a dead-pan style, follows through the inevitable implications. It’s up to the viewer to find the comparators with life and attitudes in the real world (whatever that is).

Some have liked this film; some have hated it. There seems no middle way. Nevertheless, it was a commercial success on release almost ten years ago – grossing some US$18 million – as well as receiving critical acclaim, winning the Jury Prize at Cannes, where it premiered.

Lanthimos assembled a stellar cast, many in supporting roles to the main protagonist (Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz), including Jessica Barden, Olivia Colman, John C. Reilly, Léa Seydoux, and Ben Wishaw.

A surprising, funny, thought-provoking film to see, or see again!

CFF24: Budgens and Dragons LIVE! - A D&D Parody Adventure

Budgens & Dragons is an unfair, actual play comedy D&D parody podcast with an extremely simple goal: go to the Budgens and buy a scratch card for Mother ... the catch is, everything in this game can (and will) kill your players. Once everyone dies the game resets and you have to start again - with zero knowledge of previous loops allowed.

Set in Faringdon, Oxfordshire; players can choose to play as literally anything they can think of - from stabby sausages to fed up babysitters; even the King of the Monsters himself - Godzilla. (It did not end well)

With the DM's goal of making sure the players DON'T complete the task, this back and forth, incredibly chaotic and, quite frankly, very stupid game is D&D like you've never seen it before.

So join Eddie O'Keeffe and a revolving cast of players in this adventure across an obscure market town where absolutely nothing will go wrong at all, promise.

(WARNING: Show will contain swearing and descriptions of comic violence. No actual performers will be in danger)

Reviews:

“Diary of a Badminton Player” is an absolute triumph, a feel-good play that is relatable and poignant as it is hilarious. - Cybergeek Girl

The performance was fantastic; a thoughtful balance of themes which prompted the audience to consider what it is to grow older, the frailty of the human condition and how we live our lives through local microcosms. The comedic element of the show was always handled sensitively and often segued seamlessly with the more poignant material – Audience Member

I loved the concept of the audience being in a care home. Your style and comedy was spot on. My belly hurts from laughing. - Audience Member

CFF24: This Is Not Medea

'This Is Not Medea' is a triggering one-woman dark-comedy theatre show about passports, pints, a global pandemic, arts, the lack of arts, the lack of toilet paper... and murder!

'The Other Theatre Company' is a new theatre company started up with the aim of helping share "the other voices" that deserve to be heard but don't always necessarily get the opportunity. Whilst we are based in the West Midlands, we are aiming to help independent artists in the UK with a diverse background to help them reach their potential. We will be providing artists with production support, industry contacts and opportunities to eventually tour their work on a small-to-mid-scale level.

Our debut show, 'This Is Not Medea', has been featured as a part of HYSTERIA Festival in Birmingham and also was performed at The Hope Theatre in London in 2023, both with very receptive audiences. So now the plan is to perform at Fringe Festivals in Spring/Summer 2024 whilst preparing a national tour in Autumn/Winter 2024.

We have also been selected as one of two commissioned pieces to perform at Wolverhampton Arena Theatre's LEAP Festival.

'WHISTLE AND I’LL COME TO YOU' A Ghost Story by M. R. James

‘He saw quite clearly for a moment a vision of a wide, dark expanse at night, with a fresh wind blowing, and in the midst a lonely figure’

From the finest writer of the ghost story genre, M. R. James’s 'Oh Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad' tells the tale of a young professor who, whilst walking in an English coastal village, stumbles upon a strange whistle. When blown, this sets in motion a chain of unexpected events ...

In this one-man performance, Toby Burchell takes us through this chilling tale, which is recognised as one of James’s greatest ghost stories. Originally narrated by James himself as an entertainment for friends, ‘Oh Whistle and I’ll Come To You, My Lad’ is the perfect traditional ghost story.

After premiering in Malvern Theatre’s Studio One for 3 sold out performances, this production will now tour theatres and historic houses throughout 2024.

CFF24: Make Your Own Pocket Alter

Join local textiles artist and professional costume designer Katie Taylor in a craft workshop where we will make our own pocket altar, a miniature, foldable textile altar. Using the magic of hand crafting, we will weave our intentions in using iconography, symbols, charms, embroidery and embellishments. Whether your altar is for a religious purpose or as a tribute to a zodiac sign, season, element or person, you can use them to manifest, for protection or as a lucky charm. The workshop will begin with forming a design idea - perhaps this is a colour palette, or a part of nature you would like to honour, or a person who means dearly to you. We will then move onto selecting our base fabrics, cutting, sewing and patching the fabrics together to form the base of the altar. Once this is sewn (glue can be used for less confident sewers!) we will begin to think about what decoration we would like to weave into the cloth, whether it be hand-embroidered symbols, pictures of the sun/moon etc. Finally, we will attach a button and loop for the closure, and your altar will be ready to take away with you! Beginner sewers welcome, all materials provided.

Belle (12)

Belle (12)

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

Belle (12)

Japan | 2021

Directed by: Mamoru Hosoda

Starring:

This film, whose full title is Belle: The Dragon and the Freckled Princess is loosely based on the story of Beauty and the Beast, updated to the age of social media. It’s directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who also directed our last anime screening – The Girl Who Leapt through Time.

Suzu is a shy high-school student in rural Japan, who has given up on her previous passion for writing and singing songs, following the death of her mother. She’s persuaded to enrol in a virtual world called U, where her avatar, known as Belle, becomes a rising star as a singer. The narrative shows how the real and virtual worlds can work together, so that Suzu can overcome adversity in the real world, but only with the help of Belle in the virtual one.

The film has become highly regarded in anime circles and, apparently, received a fourteen-minute standing ovation after its premier at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021. Not quite an anime musical, it’s anime with lots of music, and anime for all the family.

Ed Wood (15)

Ed Wood (15)

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

Ed Wood (15)

USA | 1994

Directed by: Tim Burton

Starring: Johnny Depp | Martin Landau | Sarah Jessica Parker

Edward D. Wood Jr. is reputed to have directed some of the worst films of all time. This may be true (I’ve seen a few of them), but his story is interesting and Tim Burton has created a very funny docu-drama about the career of this filmmaker, who brought us such gems as Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster and Plan 9 from Outer Space during the 1950s. Wood’s ambitious ideas soared way beyond his talent or financial resources. The films he produced were necessarily low budget, and Wood found ingenious ways of keeping costs down. But he also befriended the ailing and all-but-forgotten Bela Lugosi – star of the 1930s Dracula films – and included him in several of his own productions. The relationship between Wood and Lugosi is quite touching.

Johnny Depp does a fine job in the title role, apparently relishing the chance to play another eccentric character, complete with opportunities to dress-up. Martin Landau does a realistic take on Lugosi, and he got an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1995. The film also includes reconstructions of several parts of Wood’s films. Even so, the production values, though dialled down, don’t quite reach the depths of the originals!

Ed Wood cost US$18 million to make and did not recover this at the box office. Nevertheless, it has become something of a cult classic and Tim Burton himself regards it as one of his best films.

An unusual film in being both funny and informative.

An Overweening Rogue Or, ‘Malvolio between the Sheets'

An Overweening Rogue Or, ‘Malvolio between the Sheets'

Sallie Taylor - keeping the memory of Chapel Art alive

Edward Derbyshire presents:

An Overweening Rogue Or, ‘Malvolio between the Sheets’

Christopher Malvolio always dreamt of being a scholar and a playwright. Unfortunately, although he studied hard at his books, even gaining a place at Cambridge University at the tender age of 16, he was destined to enter service with the Lady of the Big House in the City, Olivia Anuliaurei. Nonetheless,

Christopher secretly continued his studies at night, by candlelight, though never under the covers. He was a serious young man, devoted to literature and music. Puritanical by nature, he controlled his wilder side until one stormy night when, outside the local tavern, he came across a letter addressed to him,

in which the Lady Olivia seemingly declared her love. Always one for an academic puzzle, the cryptic letter opened his heart and fired his ambitions in love. No longer was he to be the reserved, tee-totalling, critical Christopher of the past! Love conquers all…

Much of this is a story you may know. Join Malvolio on his tragicomic journey as he narrates how it all began, introduces you to some of his favourite live piano music, shows off his favourite colour and, against all the odds, has the final say…

Edward Derbyshire is an actor, director, examiner and teacher. His passion is for telling stories in words and music. In 2005, Edward founded the Gloucestershire Youth Players (www.gyptheatre.org), the UK’s only touring youth theatre performing solely Shakespeare. Edward is now pursuing a solo performance career, alongside his other professional work.

Fight Club (15)

Fight Club (15)

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

Fight Club (15)

USA | 1999

Directed by: David Fincher

Starring: Brad Pitt | Edward Norton | Helena Bonham Carter | Meatloaf

There seems so much to say about Fight Club, but we all (probably) know the first rule of Fight Club. It was a hugely expensive film, based on the novel by Chuck Palahniuk, writer of ‘transgressional’ fiction. It has been compared with other rebellious films like Rebel Without a Cause and The Graduate. This one was the film for Generation X (born 1965 to 1980). On its release, it divided the critics and did not do hugely well at the box office. Once released on DVD, though, it found a following, and greater commercial success. Ten years after its first release The New York Times called it the ‘defining cult movie of our time’.

The unnamed narrator of the story (Edward Norton) is disillusioned with his life and his work, is bored, and suffering acute insomnia. He joins a therapy group, but is disillusioned by this experience, too. He joins other groups, feigning issues and illnesses he does not have, until he meets and re-meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), who seems to be on a similar trip, trying to find a connection with life. Then the narrator meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and life changes to become more exciting and much more dangerous – first Fight Club, then Project Mayhem. But who is Tyler Durden?

The film did not garner any of the established awards, although it was nominated for Best Soundtrack at the Brits in 2000. Curiously, however, it did pick up the award for Best Foreign Film at the Turkish Film Critics Association (SIYAD) Awards!

Gaslight (PG)

Gaslight (PG)

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

Gaslight (PG)

USA | 1944

Directed by: George Cukor

Starring: Charles Boyer | Ingrid Bergman | Joseph Cotton | Angela Lansbury

We’ve reached ‘C’ in the ABC of Cinema – ‘C’ is for American director George Cukor, known for The Philadelphia Story (1940), Born Yesterday (1950), A Star is Born (1954) and My Fair Lady (1964), among many others in the half century from the early 1930s.

Gaslight is a fine and very atmospheric Victorian melodrama and source of the verb ‘to gaslight’, now well-known in current vocabulary.

As a young teenager, Paula is removed from London to Italy, following the murder of her aunt, a celebrated opera singer. The case remains unsolved, but some years later, Paula returns to the still-vacant house on Thornton Square with her new husband, Gregory Anton. Things that could bring back bad memories to Paula are cleared away, and the couple settle in to their new life in London. Soon, though, Paula starts to hear strange noises around the house, the gas lighting begins to flicker, she becomes forgetful, she loses important personal possessions and wonders if she is losing her mind. She does not realise the extent of her husband’s control, or the reason for it.

Ingrid Bergman is Paula and won an Oscar for Best Actress in the role. Charles Boyer was nominated for his role as the gaslighting, menacing master of the house. Joseph Cotton is the solid friend who helps to release Paula from her entrapment. But also of note is Angela Lansbury, age 18, in her first screen role, as the attractive, insolent maid whom Gregory employs to keep an eye on his wife.

The film is a remake of a 1940 British film, of the same name, directed by Thorold Dickinson. When MGM bought the rights to remake the film, the contract apparently included a clause requiring all negatives and prints of the earlier film to be destroyed. Fortunately, this destruction was never completed, and both films remain available and are both highly regarded.

The Fleetwood Mac Songbook 2024

The Fleetwood Mac Songbook 2024

Returning to the Cheltenham Playhouse in 2024, after three sell-out performances earlier this year! 🎵

Earning rave reviews wherever they play, six piece tribute band 'The Fleetwood Mac Songbook' are bringing their non-stop, hit packed show to The Cheltenham Playhouse.

The band perform a spell binding recreation of the stellar 'songbook' of 'Fleetwood Mac', drawing from over six decades of songs. Their set of course includes soft rock anthems from the 'Rumours' and 'Tango In The Night' albums but they don't forget founding member, Blues guitar legend Peter Green, and dedicate a portion of the show to a selection of his work.

Every detail is immaculate to ensure that the unmistakable 'Mac' sound is recreated faithfully - the exceptional three part harmonies are a standout as well as the band's guitarist using the famous Lindsey Buckingham Rick Turner model of guitar that gives the songs that final polish.

You will be assured of a night to remember in the company of these fine musicians for an unforgettable evening suitable for all ages.

The Terence Davies Trilogy (15)

The Terence Davies Trilogy (15)

Please note this film will take place in the Green Room Bar.

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

The Terence Davies Trilogy (15)

UK | 1983

Directed by: Terence Davies

Starring: Phillip Mawdsley | Terry O’Sullivan | Wilfrid Brambell | Valerie Lilley

We bid farewell to Terence Davies, gay British film director, who died in October 2023. This semi-autobiographical trilogy comprises three segments made at different times – Children (1976), Madonna and Child (1980) and Death and Transfiguration (1983). Together they portray the life of a gay man growing up in Liverpool from the 1950s onwards.

The depiction of life as a working-class homosexual man at this time is unrelentingly bleak and lonely. The epithet ‘gay’ seems entirely inappropriate. The protagonist’s Catholic upbringing only serves to amplify the extent of his guilt and shame. It is perhaps surprising, then, that Davies himself seemed much more upbeat in real life, with an obvious sense of humour. On the other hand, he preferred to remain alone, a single man, uninterested in the burgeoning gay scene.

The Trilogy has been screened at numerous film festivals to critical acclaim. His later films, often with autobiographical and/or gay themes are also admired, with awards going to Distant Voices, Still Lives (1988), The Long Day Closes (1992), The House of Mirth (2000) and A Quiet Passion (2016).

This screening will be in the intimate atmosphere of the Green Room Bar, and there will be a short break between each segment of the Trilogy.

Meet Tommy Atkins - 10th Anniversary Performance

Meet Tommy Atkins - 10th Anniversary Performance

MEET TOMMY ATKINS  ***Special 10th Anniversary Performance???***

Peter Gill's singlehander performance 'Meet Tommy Atkins' celebrates its tenth anniversary with a special performance at the Cheltenham Playhouse. Originally written to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War the play has since been performed all over the United Kingdom and also in France and Belgium to great critical and audience acclaim. During the covid pandemic Peter also turned the story into a very well received novel. The play takes the audience not just through Tommy's First World War experiences, but also his life back home in Britain post war. We learn of his life in the trenches - fighting on the Somme, at Passchendaele and Loos; and also of the boredom, the loss and indeed the comradeship. Returning to Britain, Tommy shows us how a generation of returning men were maltreated but how ultimately it was his generation that forced through the foundations of the Welfare State.

Expect to be shed a tear and release a laugh during this moving portrayal that is suitable for all audiences.

Playhouse Company - Brontë

Playhouse Company - Brontë

Playhouse Company Presents: Brontë by Polly Teale

“How was it possible that these three women, celibate Victorian sisters, living in isolation on the Yorkshire moors, could have written some of the most passionate (even erotic ) fiction of all time?” (Polly Teale from an interview in 2005)

As children they saw no distinction between invention and reality. Pouring out endless streams of prose their fictional childish worlds became the seeds of their adult novels.

This play does not pretend it is real:  while there is biographical detail there is make believe and imagination. Timelines cross one another on stage and the sisters interact with the characters from their novels.

Polly Teale’s play presents a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Brontë family.

Running Time: 140 minutes

Hancock’s Half Hour - The Lost TV Episodes

Hancock’s Half Hour - The Lost TV Episodes

Hancock’s Half Hour – The Lost TV Episodes

Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson

Adapted by John Hewer

Presented by Hambledon Productions in association with Tessa Le Bars Management

From the award-winning theatre company Hambledon Productions (‘Just Like That! The Tommy Cooper Show’, ‘Steptoe and Son’) comes the Godfather of all sitcoms, live on stage!

In 1954, comedian Tony Hancock burst onto the BBC with a comedy show unlike anything the British public had experienced before.

Surrounded by a stellar cast including ‘Carry On’ greats Sidney James, Hattie Jacques and Kenneth Williams, the series proved just as successful when it transferred to television.

Written by Ray Galton and Alan Simpson, ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’ redefined comedy and continues to entertain audiences to this very day.

Hambledon Productions are delighted to be recreating three, ‘lost’ episodes from the original television series. Missing from the BBC archives, this UK Tour will mark the very first time these hilarious scripts have been brought to life since their original broadcast.

Commemorating 100 years of Tony Hancock, and 70 years of ‘Hancock’s Half Hour’, take a trip to 23 Railway Cuttings, East Cheam and join Kenneth, Hattie, Sid and ‘The Lad Himself’ for three classic TV episodes of this ground-breaking, timeless comedy.

Whose Trophy is it Anyway - 2?

Whose Trophy is it Anyway - 2?

Comic Sans Script presents:

Whose Trophy is it Anyway - 2?

Following the unrivaled success of 'Whose Trophy is it Anyway - 1' which was condemned at the UN Security Council for being 'too funny' (note to Playhouse - delete this part if it turns out to be not true) we have the sequel!

If you fancy another evening of fast-paced off-the-cuff comedy, then step into the hilarious and spontaneous world of Cotswolds' Improvised Comedy!

The empty stage becomes the canvas of creativity where our performers invent characters, relationships, and absurd situations right before your eyes. On this open field of imagination our teams will compete in a veritable variety of unscripted games and challenges to win the money-can-easily-buy 'Chuckle Cup' Trophy of Champions.

Like the popular TV show 'Whose Line is it Anyway?' you won’t find rehearsed lines here; only our finest local improvisers jousting jokes like comedic knights, gathering gaffs like bumbling berry-pickers, and quilting quips like a laugh-inducing loom.

This thrill of the unexpected is entirely based off your suggestions - and contains no script, no re-takes, no safety nets, and wit so razor sharp you could shave off them...

As it's fun for the whole family - we look forward to seeing you all there!

Casting the Runes

Casting the Runes

Casting the Runes

Two ghost stories by M R James

M R James wrote his ghost stories to perform to friends in the years leading up to WW1. Today they’ve lost none of their power to terrify and amuse. Now Nunkie Theatre Company returns with two more James classics, in another thrilling one-man show.

In Casting the Runes we meet the unforgettable Mr. Karswell – magic lanternist, occult historian and scourge of academe. It’s partnered here by James’s most neglected masterpiece The Residence at Whitminster in which a dark shadow looms over the precinct of a peaceful English church…
