Backstage Heritage Tour

Backstage Heritage Tour

Go beyond the curtains and backstage at The Cheltenham Playhouse and learn how theatre productions are brought to life at this historic building. Matt Nolan will guide you through all the backstage areas, and you will learn about the operations of the theatre whilst exploring the buildings' interesting past.

Fancy a dip into the history of the old Montpellier baths? Well, you'll even see the remains of the swimming pool!

An interesting perspective of one of Cheltenham's oldest buildings!

Approx 60 minutes, walking tour.

Please note this tour is throughout a complex historical building with various steps, unstable surfaces and other hazards; therefore, it may not be suitable for those with limited mobility or young children. If demand exists, we are keen to also run more accessible versions of the tour for those who would benefit. Please let us know via access@cheltplayhouse.org.uk to register your interest.

Please note these tours will be taking place in a working theatre. This may mean the tours may vary depending on what is going on in the building.

Please Note: The tour starts on time, so to ensure access to the venue, please arrive at least 5 minutes before the start time. Bring an electronic or paper print out of ticket due to the box office not being open on the day.

Simon Yates of Touching the Void

Simon Yates of Touching the Void

Simon Yates of Touching the Void returns to the Cheltenham Playhouse following sell-out performances. Please note two different shows are available on this page, information below:

PLEASURE AND PAIN (New Talk) - Sat 18th @ 19:30 and Sun 19th @ 14:30

‘Touching the Void’ mountaineer Simon Yates is a veteran of over eighty expeditions to high and remote mountains around the globe. Now in his sixties, he is showing no signs of slowing down!

This is his story of the last decade, of new adventures and climbs in the far north and south, along with summits in South America, Central Asia and the Himalayas.

In 2023, Simon travelled with legendary British mountaineer Mick Fowler to attempt the un-climbed north face of Patkhor in Tajikistan. Their trip ran smoothly until the first evening on the mountain when they both contracted food poisoning from their freeze-dried food. After some debate they continued, but this was just the beginning of a series of events that would see them run out of food, retreat below the summit in a storm and Simon taking a bone-breaking 100m fall during the descent. After two days of lying on the glacier waiting for a helicopter, rescuers finally arrived but were unable to carry Simon down. Somehow, he would need to summon the energy for the painful three-day walk to safety.

A survival classic, with the added twists of a fast-paced thriller.

MY MOUNTAIN LIFE (Original Talk) - Sat 18th @ 14:30 and Sun 19th @ 19:30

On the remote Siula Grande in Peru in June 1985, mountaineer Simon Yates found himself in a desperately unenviable position. He was slowly being pulled off the mountain face by his injured partner, Joe Simpson, dangling on the rope 50 metres below. His decision to cut the rope saved both their lives in the epic survival that followed and with the publication of the book ‘Touching The Void’, later film and stage play, both climbers became household names.

It was an experience that could have put many off the sport of mountaineering – but not Simon. Over 35 years later, he is still a very active exploratory climber and guide, making several expeditions to the mountains each year. From the Arctic to the Antarctic, Alaska to Central Asia there is hardly a significant range that he has not visited.

Come along and witness Simon’s tireless journey from that mountain in Peru to some of the remotest on the planet and share with him the drama, excitement and beauty of modern, lightweight alpinism. Told with wit, dry humour and lavishly illustrated with images and film collected on his great climbs.

“Simon is a totally engaging speaker, who both entertains and inspires.”

Unforgiven (15)

Unforgiven (15)

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

Unforgiven (15)

USA | 1992 | 130 mins

Directed by: Clint Eastwood

Starring: Clint Eastwood| Gene Hackman| Morgan Freeman

In the ABC of Cinema, we’re going to screen a film by Clint Eastwood – a Western. Eastwood’s film-acting career goes back to the mid-1950s, but he started directing in 1971 with Play Misty for Me. Since then, he has built up a roster of over forty films as director – and often also as producer and star. The Western genre is particularly associated with Eastwood, although he has also directed thrillers, biopics, and at least one romance.

In Unforgiven, Eastwood plays Will Munny, a former killer, now reformed so as to focus on farming and raising a family with his young wife. But his wife has recently died, so to secure his family’s future, Will is persuaded to turn bounty-hunter again. The bounty has been raised by women of the local brothel, one of whom has been severely disfigured in a recent violent attack by two men from out of town. The sheriff (played by Gene Hackman) released the men without trial or punishment, thus leaving the women to find their own route to justice.

At the 1993 Academy Awards, this film won Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor in a Leading Role (Eastwood) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Hackman).

In addition to their regular monthly club nights, Howlers Comedy Club will also be bringing regular touring solo shows to The Cheltenham Playhouse Theatre.

This month Howlers presents one of Canada's finest exports, Tom Stade. Star of Live at the Apollo, The John Bishop show & Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow, Tom will be bringing his unique brand of comedy to the Playhouse in January 2025.

An irrepressible tour-de-force with decades of touring experience under his belt, Tom upholds a reputation as one of the most prolific and distinctive stand-ups around. Tom’s funny and today’s funny don’t always see eye to eye, but that’s cool; it’s not Tom’s way to follow the herd. He much prefers to take the path less travelled.

It’s a risky business navigating the tightrope of today’s times but Tom’s approaching it with his usual gusto. Join him as he airdrops his ingenious and unflinching comedy into an ever-changing minefield.  After all, without risk there is no reward.

The Florida Project (15)

The Florida Project (15)
Please note this event takes place in the Green Room

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

The Florida Project (15)
USA | 2017 | 111 mins

Directed by: Sean Baker
Starring: Brooklynn Prince| Bria Vinaite| Willem Dafoe

Sean Baker’s latest film Anora (released November 2024) just won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and we screened one of his earlier (micro-budget) movies Tangerine last April. The Florida Project again involves the lives and experiences of marginalised people – in this case the poor, trying to scrape a living in present-day America. And, again, many of the actors are first-timers, from whom Baker has drawn the most moving and memorable performances.

The scene is the Magic Castle Inn, a motel located next door to Walt Disney World. Halley and her six-year-old daughter Moonee share a room there, the mother getting by working as a stripper. Moonee is friends with other kids living in the motel, and together they enjoy unruly and imaginative fun over the summer, pretty much unsupervised. All the while the janitor of the motel keeps a supportive eye on his diverse residents.

The children are brilliant – little rascals running amok in their peculiarly pastel environment. Brooklynn Prince, as Moonee, was acclaimed by the critics, as was Bria Vanaite, playing her mother. And Willem Dafoe – as the janitor holding things together – was reckoned to have delivered one of his best performances.

A Monster Calls

A Monster Calls

'Stories are wild creatures', the monster said. 'When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?'

Patrick Ness' piercing novel is brought vividly to life in this innovative creative adaptation.

Thirteen-year-old Conor and his mum have managed just fine since his dad moved. But now his mum is sick and not getting any better. His grandmother won’t stop interfering and the kids at school won’t look him in the eye. Then, one night, Conor is woken by something at his window. A monster has come walking. It’s come to tell Conor tales from when it walked before. And when it’s finished, Conor must tell his own story and face his deepest fears.

Using a combination of movement, ensemble work, story telling techniques and naturalism the Drama Scholars of Cheltenham College will take this modern children's classic from page to stage.

Please note that this production is only suitable for children over the age of 12 due to the potentially upsetting themes of grief and cancer treatment.

'A Monster Calls' is based on the novel by Patrick Ness and inspired by an original idea by Siobhan Dowd, devised by Sally Cookson, Adam Peck and the Company

Dreams (PG)

Dreams (PG)
The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

Dreams (PG)
Japan/USA | 1990 | 119 mins
Directed by: Akira Kurosawa
Starring: Akira Terao| Mitsunori Isaki| Martin Scorsese

Dreams is mesmeric, challenging, and unique. It’s one of the final films, and a departure from his archetypal Samurai epics, of the legendary Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. In this extremely personal project, he presents an anthology of eight wildly differing dreams he was plagued with throughout his life. Spanning an array of themes from death, guilt, spirituality and fear, to more particular subjects like environmentalism and nuclear fallout, each vignette, for the most part, comes across like a mystical folk tale of old.

Although the screenplay was penned entirely by Kurosawa, the production was a collaborative effort. George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were instrumental in bringing the vision to life, and Martin Scorsese, who cites Kurosawa as 'my master', makes a cameo appearance.

Films like Dreams come along only once every few years. They echo through the generations, transcending linguistic, economic and geographical barriers. While Kurosawa's legacy was secure long before Dreams, this film undoubtedly deserves a place in his highlight reel.

An Overweening Rogue Or, ‘Malvolio between the Sheets'

An Overweening Rogue Or, ‘Malvolio between the Sheets'

Sallie Taylor - keeping the memory of Chapel Art alive

Edward Derbyshire presents:

An Overweening Rogue Or, ‘Malvolio between the Sheets’

Christopher Malvolio always dreamt of being a scholar and a playwright. Unfortunately, although he studied hard at his books, even gaining a place at Cambridge University at the tender age of 16, he was destined to enter service with the Lady of the Big House in the City, Olivia Anuliaurei. Nonetheless,

Christopher secretly continued his studies at night, by candlelight, though never under the covers. He was a serious young man, devoted to literature and music. Puritanical by nature, he controlled his wilder side until one stormy night when, outside the local tavern, he came across a letter addressed to him,

in which the Lady Olivia seemingly declared her love. Always one for an academic puzzle, the cryptic letter opened his heart and fired his ambitions in love. No longer was he to be the reserved, tee-totalling, critical Christopher of the past! Love conquers all…

Much of this is a story you may know. Join Malvolio on his tragicomic journey as he narrates how it all began, introduces you to some of his favourite live piano music, shows off his favourite colour and, against all the odds, has the final say…

Edward Derbyshire is an actor, director, examiner and teacher. His passion is for telling stories in words and music. In 2005, Edward founded the Gloucestershire Youth Players (www.gyptheatre.org), the UK’s only touring youth theatre performing solely Shakespeare. Edward is now pursuing a solo performance career, alongside his other professional work.

Dance Craze (12A)

Dance Craze (12A)
Please note this event takes place in the Green Room

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

Dance Craze (12A)
UK | 1981 | 91 mins
Directed by: Joe Massot

Dance Craze documents the phenomenon of 2-tone – the music genre that blended Jamaican ska and reggae with punk rock and new wave. It swept through the UK music scene at the end of the 1970s and into the early ‘80s - the start of Thatcher’s Britain.

This is not a documentary of ‘talking heads’ – just live music, filmed in 1980 at various gigs around the country, from Aylesbury to Coventry; from London to Liverpool. The atmosphere achieved in the film is infectious, and it includes performances of 27 songs by various bands in the 2-tone fold, featuring The Specials, Madness, Bad Manners, The Bodysnatchers, The Selecter, and The Beat. First released to the world in 1981, Dance Craze was restored and re-released in 2023. Obviously, we’ll be screening the restored version.

While we may not be able to recreate in the Green Room Bar the particular character of the venues where the gigs were performed back in 1980, we’ll do our best to make it a House of Fun. The seating will be more cabaret than theatre, the bar will be open throughout, and we’ll even try to squeeze in a small dance floor.

This is a chance for Gen-X to introduce Gen-Z to the some of the best things that happened in 1980. Even if you done too much, much too young, you can still be having fun with Dance Craze at The Eclectic Cinema!

Mr Klein (12)

Mr Klein (12)
Mr Klein (12)
France/Italy | 1976 | 123 mins
Directed by: Joseph Losey
Starring: Alain Delon|Jeanne Moreau|Michael Lonsdale

We bid a final farewell to Alain Delon, French actor, who died last August, aged 88, with a screening of Mr Klein. It’s set in Paris, 1942, during the Nazi occupation of France, and it seems to be a tale of two Mr Kleins. For the one played by Delon, it is perhaps the best of times: he’s an art dealer seizing the opportunity to relieve wealthy Jews of their artworks in exchange for the money they need to finance their intended escape. This Mr Klein is not Jewish, at least as far as we can tell. The other Mr Klein is certainly Jewish, is wanted by the police, and cannot be traced. In fact, we never see him, but we must surmise that for this Mr Klein it is the worst of times. Early on, the identities of these two men become intertwined, so that the art dealer is determined to find the other Mr Klein and to prove his own non-Jewish credentials to the authorities. The mystery unfolds in Kafkaesque fashion, leading to tragic consequences.

For all those Elio fans out there, this is for you! Elio, of course, is played by Timothée Chalamet, and his character is the 17-year-old son of an archaeology professor, played by Michael Stuhlbarg. It’s the summer vacation in Lombardy, and things start to get more interesting following the arrival of Oliver (played by Armie Hammer), a 24-year-old graduate, who will spend several weeks with the family, working as an assistant to Elio’s father. A strong attraction develops between Oliver and Elio, who is still finding his feet in the world of sex and romance. Adding in the Italian sunshine and the beautiful countryside, all the ingredients are there for an unforgettable summer.

This film brought its Italian director international acclaim, which has continued since with his two 2024 releases Challengers and Queer. The film was a great critical and commercial success, and James Ivory was honoured with an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

For Chalamet, this film certainly turbo-charged his nascent stardom, leading to major roles in films such as DuneLittle WomenWonka and, most recently, A Complete Unknown.

Just two days after Timothée, for fans of Kristen Stewart, this is for you! (Note, this film is on a WEDNESDAY.) Of course, your interest in these stars should not be mutually exclusive, so why not come and see both films?

This is an erotic thriller, set in New Mexico, where Kristen plays Lou, manager of a run-down, out-of-town gym with a diverse iron-pumping clientele. When Jackie (played by Katy O’Brian) appears, Lou is immediately attracted and offers help for her new client to prepare for a body-building competition in Las Vegas. Soon they are sharing more intimate moments. The thrills begin as they are drawn closer to Lou’s unstable and criminal family.

This is a genre-bending movie from British director, Rose Glass. It mixes lesbian romance with crime thriller and fantasy, a blend that works well in what is only the director’s second feature. The first was the psychological horror, St Maud (2019), which earned two BAFTA nominations in 2021.

Andrew Bird

Andrew Bird

In addition to their regular monthly club nights, Howlers Comedy Club will also be bringing regular touring solo shows to The Cheltenham Playhouse Theatre.

This month Howlers presents Andrew Bird. Andrew has been a regular headliner for our club shows for many years and we are super excited to be bringing his tour show to Cheltenham for the very first time.

ANDREW BIRD - A TICKLISH MIND

After his TV appearance on "The Russell Howard Hour" Andrew supported Russell Howard on his massive national tour including six straight shows at The London Palladium. He has also recently supported Troy Hawke and at The UK Comedy Awards was voted “Comic’s Comic-Best Act”.

When asking his 9-year-old son if he is ticklish, he replied “only my mind”. Which is a great way to describe a sense of humour. And lord knows we all need a good tickle in the mind now and then so join Andrew as he finds the funny from “Sports washing” to Spa hotels.

Having previously supporting Russell at Bristol's Ashton Gate Football stadium he’s also supported Rhod Gilbert, Rob Brydon, America’s Brian Regan and Michelle Wolfe on their only London shows and Michael McIntyre on an entire arena tour including Wembley and the O2. He’s written on the TV shows Jon Richardson’s Ultimate Worrier and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

"A brilliantly funny comedian" Russell Howard

"Funny as Hell" Rhod Gilbert

“Truly an excellent comedian” Michael McIntyre

“Andrew’s deep need for approval and general anxiety make him utterly compelling onstage. Love it! Never stop, never change.” Troy Hawke

The Eclectic Cinema Presents:

We Need to Talk about Kevin (15)
UK/USA | 2011 112 minutes
DIRECTED BY
Lynne Ramsay
STARRING
Tilda Swinton| John C. Reilly| Ezra Miller

Lynne Ramsay's psychological thriller, and best-film winner at the London Film Festival, is an excellent adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s book. It examines the parent-child bond between a first-time mother and her unplanned son, and shows just how this seemingly most natural of human connections is not always to be relied upon.

It is not the story of Kevin, played by Ezra Miller in his teenage years, so much as his mother Eva, brilliantly played by Tilda Swinton. Her unintended motherhood breaks her down over many years, aided by Kevin himself whose behaviour develops from irritatingly mindless to intentionally manipulative. Ramsay uses a non-linear structure, following two timelines simultaneously. One precedes, the other follows, and they merge with an event so serious that it has re-shaped the family’s lives.

Sound design, colour palette and editing help the audience enter the mind of a woman who may be suffering a nervous breakdown, or may be the victim of her vindictive child. Endless analysis would be possible; on the other hand, it's as much a rich sensory experience as an immersive psychological case study.

The Wilde Show - Live Game Show Experience!

The Wilde Show - Live Game Show Experience!
The Wilde Show - Live Game Show Experience!

In a world where NOTHING is certain and EVERYTHING is up for grabs...

This is not just a show—it’s a chaotic collision of comedy, competition, and complete unpredictability. Step into the theatre and the spotlight could land on YOU at any moment.

'The Wilde Show' is the live event where the rules are simple: Every challenge, every contestant, every prize—decided on the spot.

Will it be a test of skill, a stroke of luck, or sheer hilarity? Even WE don’t know until the moment arrives.

The Contestants? Plucked from the audience.

The Challenges? Picked at random.

The Prizes? Let’s just say...anything is possible.

Hosted by the magnetic Archie Wilde, this show will have you on the edge of your seat, roaring with laughter, and secretly hoping you’re next. Will you rise to the occasion, or crumble under the weight of improvised madness?

This is not just a night out—it’s an EXPERIENCE. It’s wild. It’s unpredictable. It’s comedy at its most chaotic.

So, take your chances. Spin the wheel. Draw your destiny. Because here, in the world of 'The Wilde Show'… anything can happen.

Get ready for a show where EVERYONE is part of the action.

Are you brave enough to step into the madness?

Ticket Holders, please note:

The first four rows are reserved for those who are willing to actively participate on stage during the show. If you’re ready to dive into the chaos and potentially become a star of the night, these are the seats for you!

If you’d prefer to simply sit back, relax, and enjoy the hilarity, feel free to select any other seat in the theatre.

Regardless of where you sit, everyone will still play a part by cheering on contestants and team captains—because the energy of the audience is what makes The Wilde Show come to life.

Make your choice and prepare for an unforgettable evening.

Ingmar Bergman

As a follow-up to our presentation of Summer with Monika (1952), we now screen Ingmar Bergman’s later, and perhaps greatest film. Based partially on Bergman’s own childhood, it tells the story of the theatrical Ekdahl family, who live in pleasant chaos in their large family home. The focus is on ten-year-old Alexander, highly imaginative son of Oscar and Emilie, who is very drawn to the ideas of theatre and story-telling. But happiness is cut short by Oscar’s sudden death and Emilie’s remarriage to an authoritarian bishop, who believes Alexander’s imagination must be curbed.

The film was released to universal acclaim in 1982. In 1984, it won four Academy Awards and numerous other awards around the world for Best Foreign Language Film, including a César and a Golden Globe.

Yes, this is a long film, but it’s so good you’ll hardly notice. Here is your chance to get comfy and watch the latest restored version on the big screen.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages

SAVS are back in May 2025 with Rock of Ages!

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about t
