7th April 2025 MONDAY 19:30
AUDITORIUM

Quadrophenia, above all else, does a fantastic job of evoking a time (1964), a place (England) and a cultural phenomenon (Mods & Rockers). The plot revolves around a young man struggling to find his way in the world on the one hand, and on the other, a clash between the two warring clans, on weekend in Brighton. Phil Daniels plays Jimmy, a young Mod who lives for three things: parties, pills and his scooter (at least that's what his outward personality would have you believe). These are the three things he can rely on to take him away from the mundane drudgery of everyday life and the killjoys that are his job, his parents and the system.

Nowadays, the film is perhaps best remembered for tis soundtrack from The Who (all of whom were also executive producers). But it's much more than that: it's a pop-culture time-capsule and an incisive, divisive icon of British film history.

DIRECTED
Rainer Werner Fassbinder
STARRING
Brigitte Mira | El Hedi ben Salem

28th April 2025 MONDAY 19:30
AUDITORIUM

In the ABC of Cinema, we've reached F for Fassbinder, a dominant force in 1970s German cinema. Fear Eats the Soul, portraying the lot of migrant workers in Munich and the racism that pursues them, still resonates today. Immigration is still a hot topic fifty years on.

Ali is a migrant from Morocco, in his 30s; Emmi is German, in her 60s, widowed and working as a cleaner. They meet in a bar; their relationship develops and they become close. But this is seen as outrageous, breaking the unwritten rule of segregation. Both suffer the consequences of prejudice before hope glimmers in the final act.

Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages

SAVS are back in May 2025 with Rock of Ages!

It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood, and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net, Lycra, lace and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues, a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality. Amidst the madness, aspiring rock star (and resident toilet cleaner) Drew longs to take the stage as the next big thing (and longs for small-town girl Sherri, fresh off the bus from Kansas with stars in her eyes). But the rock ’n’ roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip – and themselves – before it’s too late? Only the music of hit bands Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more hold the answer.

Tickets for opening night (6th May 2025) are currently £20.00 until 50% of tickets have sold!

Pinocchio

Pinocchio
The University of Gloucestershire presents Pinocchio:

Geppetto, the puppet master, longs for a child and is granted his wish by a fairy who brings a wooden puppet to life.  In order to become a real boy, however, Pinocchio must prove his worth, and so he sets out on a journey of self-discovery under the guidance of his conscience in the guise of a cricket! Told through musical theatre this piece explores the love of a parent for a child as Pinocchio gets himself into many scrapes when led astray by a devious Fox and a Cat, and has to be rescued in order to be guided home and learn from his mistakes.

Will Geppetto finally have his real-life boy to care for, or will Pinocchio find the temptations in the big wide world far more enticing than being a good boy at home and school?

A new family musical, written by Karen Benjamin with songs by David Last, performed by Performing Arts students from the University of Gloucestershire.  Age recommendation 7+.

CFF25: FiddleBop

This event is part of the Cheltenham Fringe Festival, and will be taking place in our Green Room.

FiddleBop play Gypsy Jazz Plus on violin, Spanish guitar, keyboard, fretless bass guitar, and with four voices in harmony.

Gypsy Jazz Plus? Back in the 1930s, the Hot Club de France (think Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli) created amazing music based on current and past pop tunes, traditional Gypsy melodies, their own compositions, even some JS Bach. FiddleBop's music is just as wide-ranging: expect Gypsy-flavoured jazz drawn from all of the genre's century-long history, plus jazz-flavoured classic pop, folk-jazz, and the band's own creations. Add superb musicianship and irreverent banter, then season to taste.

Dave Favis-Mortlock is on violin and vocals. Joanna Davies plays Spanish guitar and sings (she's the rhythmic foundation of FiddleBop). Paul Stevens is FiddleBop's keyboard whiz, and Graeme Lamble is FiddleBop's fretless bassist extaordinaire.

Fresh from 2025's HowThLightGetsIn Festival at Hay-on-Wye, FiddleBop have also wowed audiences at Upton Jazz Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival, and many others. their appearance at Cheltenham Fringe promises to be memorable. See you there?

Experience the psychological transformation of two intimately connected people as they search, in their own ways, for an elusive route to power.

This presentation of one of Shakespeare's best known tragedies explores the themes of deception, ambition, and ultimate failure using Shakespeare's words and live piano music to evoke a journey that is always going to end in tragedy.

Be prepared to be immersed in a whirlwind of words and sound in an immersive event that brings questions all too relevant to our world to the fore: for, when power is involved, what will humans not do?

Edward Derbyshire is an actor, musician, poet and teacher who brings his own unique slant to characters we think we know from Shakespeare's plays. Having played the comedic characters of Bottom and Malvolio to an enthusiastic response, Edward is now excited to turn his attention to two of the most thrilling of Shakespeare's 'historical' creations: Lady Macbeth and Macbeth.

And be warned: you may also meet some 'witches'!

The Rivals

The Rivals
The Rivals, a 17th Century comedy adventure by Richard Sheridan

When fashionable 18th century London society comes to take the waters in the spa-town of Bath, comic confusion, daring duels and romantic entanglements abound.
At the centre of it all is heiress, Lydia Languish, who is determined to elope with the penniless Ensign Beverly rather than marry the eligible Jack Absolute.

Come and sample the sparkling wit and whirlwind plot of The Rivals, a Restoration Comedy which has delighted audiences for over 250 years with its collection of comic characters, including the formidable Mrs Malaprop, a creation so famous for the way she mangles the English language that her name is now immortalised in the dictionary.

This brand-new adaptation combines Richard Brinsley Sheridan's masterpiece with Rain or Shine's fast and furious comic flair.

Some of last year's Audience Comments:

"We were fortunate enough to watch the brilliant performance of The Importance of Being Earnest given by Rain or Sines at Cawley Hall, Herefordshire last night. I am an ex English & drama teacher & inspector so I know the play well. This is one of the best performances of Earnest I've ever seen. Well done!" - Jackie

"Thank you, thank you, thank you for a performance evening, It was wonderful - so slick, so clever, so joyful. A complete and utter delight." - Anita

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
The Playhouse Company presents:

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

There can be few teachers more vividly drawn in literature, than Muriel Spark's creation, Miss Jean Brodie:
"Little girls, I am in the business of putting old head on young shoulders, and all my pupils are the créme de la créme."

She has her favourites - her 'Brodie Set' - the beautiful Jenny, the timid Mary, the dramatic Monica, and the sharp-witted and ever-watchful Sandy.
"Give me a girl at an impressionable age, and she is mine for life." speaks the dedicated Miss Brodie to her enraptured class.

In conservative and respectable Edinburgh, in the 1930s, sits the Marica Blaine School for Girls. Within that drab facility, we follow the girls' journey under the influence of the unconventional and charismatic Miss Brodie; through their school years, from their adoration to their disillusionment.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is full of humour, as well as being a gripping drama of manipulation and suspicion; and ultimately betrayal.

In 2019, the BBC published a list of the top 100 Most Inspiring Novels written in the English language. The 1961 novel of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark is included in this list. The 1966 stage adaptation by Jay Presson Allen starred Vanessa Redgrave as Jean Brodie. The late Maggie Smith won Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Jean Brodie in the 1969 Film. Geraldine McEwan played Jean Brodie to great acclaim in the 1978 TV Series.
