The Rivals

The Rivals
The Rivals, a 17th Century comedy adventure by Richard Sheridan

When fashionable 18th century London society comes to take the waters in the spa-town of Bath, comic confusion, daring duels and romantic entanglements abound.
At the centre of it all is heiress, Lydia Languish, who is determined to elope with the penniless Ensign Beverly rather than marry the eligible Jack Absolute.

Come and sample the sparkling wit and whirlwind plot of The Rivals, a Restoration Comedy which has delighted audiences for over 250 years with its collection of comic characters, including the formidable Mrs Malaprop, a creation so famous for the way she mangles the English language that her name is now immortalised in the dictionary.

This brand-new adaptation combines Richard Brinsley Sheridan's masterpiece with Rain or Shine's fast and furious comic flair.

Some of last year's Audience Comments:

"We were fortunate enough to watch the brilliant performance of The Importance of Being Earnest given by Rain or Sines at Cawley Hall, Herefordshire last night. I am an ex English & drama teacher & inspector so I know the play well. This is one of the best performances of Earnest I've ever seen. Well done!" - Jackie

"Thank you, thank you, thank you for a performance evening, It was wonderful - so slick, so clever, so joyful. A complete and utter delight." - Anita

Swing From Paris Sept '25

Swing From Paris Sept '25
From Django to Tango - Swing From Paris are an all-string jazz quartet of violin (Fenner Curtis), guitars (Andy Bowen & Sam Hughes) and double bass (Tomasz Williams), inspired by the music of the 1930s, '40s and '50s: from the cafés and cabarets of Montmartre to Artie Shaw, Django Reinhardt, Stéphane Grappelli and the master of tango, Astor Piazzolla. Their Parisian-flavoured jazz and vintage swing has been delighting audiences for almost 20 years: from major jazz festivals including the Django Reinhardt Festival as Samois-sur-Seine and performing at the French Ambassador's residence for Bastille Day.

Joining the band for this special performance will be accordionist and bandoneonist, Mirek Salmon, a tango virtuoso who has performed with BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Welsh National Opera, the RSC, and the London Tango Orchestra. An expert in the music of Astor Piazzolla, he also tours internationally with his own trio, Tango Calor.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
The Playhouse Company presents:

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

There can be few teachers more vividly drawn in literature, than Muriel Spark's creation, Miss Jean Brodie:
"Little girls, I am in the business of putting old heads on young shoulders, and all my pupils are the crème de la crème."

She has her favourites - her 'Brodie Set' - the beautiful Jenny, the timid Mary, the dramatic Monica, and the sharp-witted and ever-watchful Sandy.
"Give me a girl at an impressionable age, and she is mine for life." speaks the dedicated Miss Brodie to her enraptured class.

In conservative and respectable Edinburgh, in the 1930s, sits the Marica Blaine School for Girls. Within that drab facility, we follow the girls' journey under the influence of the unconventional and charismatic Miss Brodie; through their school years, from their adoration to their disillusion.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is full of humour, as well as being a gripping drama of manipulation and suspicion; and ultimately betrayal.

In 2019, the BBC published a list of the top 100 Most Inspiring Novels written in the English language. The 1961 novel of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie by Muriel Spark is included in this list. The 1966 stage adaptation by Jay Presson Allen starred Vanessa Redgrave as Jean Brodie. The late Maggie Smith won Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Jean Brodie in the 1969 Film. Geraldine McEwan played Jean Brodie to great acclaim in the 1978 TV Series.

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast
Jacob's Well returns once more to the Playhouse with a tale as old as time...

An act of cruelty from a selfish and hard-hearted prince sets in motion a terrible, enchanted revenge. At his castle, now hidden from the world, the once handsome, young prince finds he is a terrifying beast and his entire household is transformed, all left to their grim fate.

Elsewhere, in a provincial French town, one girl, enthralled by the stories in literature, dreams of a more fulfilling and exciting life beyond the borders of her town. Someone else, however, has other plans; a local heart-throb and merciless hunter, who has her firmly in his sights.

The enchanted and disenchanted worlds of the fallen prince and the beautiful dreamer are about to collide. Can love save them before it's too late?

Disney's beloved classic comes alive once more this autumn for a pre-Christmas spectacular. Alan Menken's familiar score pairs with all new songs from the Broadway revival for a pitch-perfect musical theatre production.

Experience, once more, the thrills, the drama, the music and the romance of Disney's Beauty and the Beast...and be our guest!

Praise for Jacob's Well:
" A great night out... highly impressed."
"One of the most entertaining pieces of theatre I have seen in years."
"A brilliant show... I wish I had the chance to see it again!"
"Incredible acting, fabulous singing and moving drama - what more could you want?"

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Content Warning
Pantomime is fun for everyone, however the production can have effects that are loud, humour that is aimed at adults and instances where actors may get the audience involved! Please keep this in mind when booking tickets if any of your party are younger than 5, or of a sensitive disposition. We pride ourselves on inclusivity and have scheduled relaxed and signed performances.

There are adult only shows (18+) so please double check the performance you're booking.

Performance contains, smoke, haze, strobe, loud music, audience interaction.

For the relaxed performances, several changes have been made to make the show more suited to those who prefer a more relaxed environment. The script is the same, but regular theatre 'rules' are relaxed, house lights will be left up, sound and lighting levels will be less intense, and you're welcome to come and go during the performance. There will also be extra staff and volunteers on-site to support. The Cheltenham Playhouse is proud to be welcoming to all, so if you have any further information, questions, or accommodations, please don't hesitate to contact our box office, who will be happy to help! Please note for those with epilepsy, the performances may not be suitable.
