Wednesday 26 Feb 2025

Play Reading: Monday 31st March 2025, 7:30pm

Green Room Bar, Cheltenham Playhouse

Come along to our Play Reading of The Welkin by Lucy Kirkwood.

Play Readings are a great low-pressure way to introduce and familiarise yourself with a play, its themes and characters:

Rural Suffolk, 1759. As the country waits for Halley’s Comet, Sally Poppy is sentenced to hang for a heinous murder. When she claims to be pregnant, a jury of twelve matrons are taken from their housework to decide whether she is telling the truth, or simply trying to escape the noose.

With only midwife Lizzy Luke prepared to defend the girl, and a mob baying for blood outside, the matrons wrestle with their new authority, and the murderess in their midst.

'The Welkin', by Lucy Kirkwood, premiered at the National Theatre, London, in 2020. Kirkwood play 'The Children' opened in the West End and transferred to Broadway in 2017, was the winner of the Writers’ Guild Best Play award, and was nominated for a Tony Award.

Ages are for guidance only - don't worry if you are older/younger

Miss Brodie is a formidable figure who moulds young minds to her form. And what is more, she is so intensely interesting, that the girls admire her above all else. But Miss Brodie is not honest. She prevaricates, and then tells the girls to do as she tells them, not as she does herself. She is having an affair with the Music Teacher, and has had one with the Art Teacher.

Jean Brodie has her favourite - her 'Brodie Set' - the beautiful Jenny, the timid Mary, the dramatic Monica, and the sharp-witted and ever-watchful Sandy. At the Marcia Blaine School for Girls, in the conservative and respectable Edinburgh of the 1930s, we follow the girls' journey under the influence of the charismatic Miss Brodie, from their adoration to their disillusionment.
